Volunteers sought for Haleakala service trip

The Friends of Haleakala National Park is seeking enthusiastic and fit volunteers for a strenuous three-night backpacking service trip into the park’s wilderness areas from Sept. 3-6.

Volunteers will hike into the crater and spend three nights in the Paliku Wilderness Ranger Cabin. They will be removing invasive plant species to protect native plants and nene habitat, according to a news release from the nonprofit.

Participants must be physically capable of being in the outdoors and at higher elevations, walking on uneven terrain up to 5 miles each shift and carrying a backpack with a sleeping bag and other items.

Safety equipment and tools will be provided by Haleakala National Park.

Rotary club to host district governor

Rotary District 5000 Governor Randy Hart will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The meeting will be held at the Royal Lahaina Resort’s Royal Ocean Terrace Restaurant.

Hart is a member of the Rotary Club of Hilo and has been a Rotarian for more than 30 years.

A free slideshow and cooking demonstration on healthy eating will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the J. Walter Cameron Center.

Dr. Colin Zhu, known as “The Chef Doc,” will prepare Asian-style tofu lettuce boats and yogurt grape pops.

Mask wearing and social distancing are encouraged at this indoor event. Reservations are not required. The event is presented by the Vegan Society of Hawaii and food will be provided by Down to Earth Organic and Natural.

Bread-making workshop to be held

The Portuguese Association of Maui will hold a free workshop on making bread in a stone oven at Heritage Hall in Paia from 7:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 5.

Participants are advised to wear covered shoes, and aprons are recommended, the association said.

Families with children ages 8 and older are especially welcome.

Great white sharks topic of presentation

Underwater photographer and former National Geographic assignment photographer David Fleetham will talk about great white sharks during a free Zoom presentation, “Photographing Great White Sharks — A journey to Australia, South Africa, Guadalupe Island, Mexico and back to Hawaii,” at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 7.

The presentation is part of Maui Nui Marine Resource Council’s monthly Know Your Ocean Speaker Series, sponsored by the County of Maui. Admission is free, but advance registration is required. To register, visit bit.ly/SharkPhotographyWebinar.

Maui Ki-Aikido will offer a special self-defense workshop for teens and adults from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 16, at the Shunshinkan Dojo in Wailuku.

The class will be taught by 6th Dan Head Instructor Tracy Reasoner. The workshop will cover the fundamentals of awareness and calmness in movement, as well as simple self-defense techniques.

The cost is $10 per person. Reservations are not required, but participants should arrive by 6 p.m. to sign in. Participants should also wear comfortable loose clothing and slippers.

Alu Like receives $830K OHA grant

Nonprofit Alu Like received a grant of $830,000 from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to help Native Hawaiians who need emergency economic assistance for necessities such as back rent, mortgage, utilities, transportation and funeral expenses.

Alu Like will serve a minimum of 3,000 OHA beneficiaries over the next two years to stabilize, strengthen and create action plans for a positive and thriving future, the nonprofit said in a news release.

The organization has been working to help Native Hawaiians achieve social and economic self-sufficiency since 1975, according to its website. It has offices on Maui, Molokai, Hawaii island, Kauai and Oahu.
